Singapore is an immigrant society. From our colonial past to modern global city Singapore, we are most proud of our multicultural background. The Chinese community in particular, has contributed much to nation building, and despite being the majority race, multicultural practice remains the core values in this group.
This project will interview (podcast) with 10 Mandarin-speaking immigrants living in Singapore. The interviewees come from diverse regions such as Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
The series of podcast will eventually be published as a bilingual e-book (English and Chinese) with a goal to connect Mandarin and English language speakers in Singapore.
In particular, we want to showcase the day to day experiences of ordinary Mandarin speakers and the similarities that we share in our routines, values, and challenges in life. We want to highlight that we have more in common in-spite of our preferred spoken language, and that the integration of immigrants can be achieved through the appreciation of our shared experiences, not differences.
